"Soundfeeder (k)" (2022)

[sound installation - wood, integrated speaker/player/light system ]

 

The installation "Soundfeeder (k)" is one object from the collection of wooden sound boxes, taking inspiration from bird- and bee-feeders. Each box contains a different soundscape, played through an integrated speaker/player system. They are movable objects that can be carried and placed in different spots of the estate, altering their soundscape and therefore perception and experience for the visitor.

 

⊶ about the work

This object, whose shape and way of integration into space is loosely inspired by bird feeding stations, encapsulates remote places in the same moment in time and same places in different moments in time. "Soundfeeder (k)" carries within a superposition of different field recordings, texts, words, and collected sound-impressions from Belgium, Kurdistan/Rojava (thanks to Gulistan Sido and Masnur Tayfouri), Serbia, Mexico, and some in-between places. Superposing these places through inverted, reversed, original recordings, and with slicing, re-placing, and change of durations a change of the order of time happens. And a new opening for perception appears. At times, when sound "dies", shadows of sound remain. The unspoken, yet present can illuminate... can elucidate. While sometimes some words may burn, they also light the way. And truly listening beyond just hearing will always light the way.

The carved soundwaves in the physical object that houses this sound-story are shapes of selection of spoken words from talks and conversations we had with Kurdish students of Rojava University and with Zapatistas at various Guerilla University sessions that took place in 2020 and 2021.

The installation "Soundfeeder (k)" is currently displayed at Orangeries de Bierbais/Laboratory for Peace in Belgium.
The radio-piece version of this work was broadcasted on September 29th at dokumenta15 lumbung radio. Its "house" box becoming the radio.
