HappyNew2020

█About:

Image
Each wave is constructed out of determining parts of each letter of the phrase “Happy New Year” phonetically, identified through analysis of individual recordings. Resulting three images are then assigned each its own sound, in some way relatable to the meaning of the word (either literally or as a wish).

Sounds
“happy”, audio collage, 2019 [sources: daisyeek/dejana, oberon81, morgantj, reinsamba, obxjohn, samrtxxd, wjoojoo, bjbutler, stevious42, monosfera, funwithsound, drotztuhn, prucanada, gary-in-wv, samuelgremaud, skittle]
“new”, audio collage of various sounds of opening things, 2019 [sources: daisyeek/dejana, greg-baumont, kklab5050, dreeke, joedeshon, benjaminelan, the-bizniss, andre-desartistes, antousai]
“year”, an acoustic piece for two prepared self-played violins + one intervening perfromer-played violin, duration 20'20'', by Dejana Sekulic (2019)

Color
On the meaning of colors (with regard to this being a “new year’s wish card”, only positive meanings are quoted):
Yellow, a primary color, is the color of the mind and the intellect. It is optimistic and cheerful.
Blue, a primary color, is the color of trust and peace. It can suggest loyalty and integrity. It is the color of the ocean and the sky; it often symbolizes serenity, stability, inspiration, or wisdom. It can be a calming color, and symbolize reliability.
Magenta, a primary color, is a color of universal harmony and emotional balance. It is spiritual yet practical, encouraging common sense and a balanced outlook on life.

Temporality of the Impossible Call for Scores 2018 :: Announcing Selected Composers
Thank you to (and for) all the composers who submitted to the "Temporality of the Impossible" 2018 Call for Scores! Also, Dejana is extremely thankful to the members of the selection Panel, without whom it would not have been possible to do this!
Congratulations to the two selected composers: Dario Buccino and Tatiana Gerasimenok. Dejana is extremely looking forward to start actively collaborating with them soon!

The presented interest for the project by so many talented people (86 applications, by composers of a very diverse origin - 31 countries), with extra adventurous mind+heart+ears, will certainly fuel the continuation of the project and hopefully open new collaborative opportunities!

An announcement that has been waiting long, and patiently, enough in the owen

Now that the last piece of the administrative puzzle is in (passport received back, with the visa in it=yeeey), my heart+mind+soul can have a little public "#happinessdistilled" outburst... So excited to, in a few short weeks, head to the first visit+meet at the CeReNeM | Centre for Research in New Music, and start off the PhD chapter of my "Temporality of the Impossible: contemporary violin music, aesthetics, technique and performance". To continue this work, this #query of what-where-why-how to #feel, make, #think violin and violin music today, in this setting, is nothing short of a #dreamcometrue. Especially looking forward for my ears, listening and hearing, mind and thinking to be challenged, pushed and inspired by Philip Thomas and Aaron Cassidy. But as well all the others, there and everywhere, who are, or will, get entangled in this journey. Equipped with these few things to start with, can't wait to enrich the 'pile' with all the #newmusic and things to come and be discovered... Will certainly make an extra effort to make my elevated carbon footprint that this BE-UK commute will produce be #meaningful... . . #TemporalityOfTheImpossible #contemporarymusic #contemporaryviolin #performance #aesthetics #search #research @weloveresearch #challengeyoursenses #challengeyourperception #musiclove #soundlove #soundgeek #barefootviolinist #musicianslife

"These are intentionally as difficult as I can make them, because I think we’re now surrounded by very serious problems in society, and we tend to think that the situation is hopeless and that it’s just impossible to do something that will make everything turn out properly. So I think that this music, which is almost impossible, gives an instance of the practicality of the impossible." - John Cage, about "Freeman Etudes"

Performance+Talk Sessions are part of Dejana’s research project “Temporality of the Impossible: contemporary violin music, technique, notation and performance”. The next three sessions (see dates here) will take place in ArtBase in Brussels (Belgium) and for this occasion Dejana will be performing on the violin by Thomas Meuwissen... [ NADA: Act 1 ]

A building. An instrument...
Building an instrument...
A building as instrument...

Any, even slightly and let alone carefully thought about, space and its organisation determined by objects, walls, that make some sort of barriers to the air, makes for a space to become a space of resonance.. a resonance chamber. Within that space, we could certainly feel as, on a grander level, part of its structure, part of its sound structure, part of the sound and the sound wave.
And sometimes while within it, we are played by that space, by that architecture as instrument...
And sometimes... we can get inspired and make a building be an instrument...

"Sensonarium" - imaginarium for sensing sound

What if you were a particle of a sound? If you could perceive sound as being inside of it?

The interactive sound installation Sensonarium is imagined as a representation of the membrane that holds a sound. Being inside of this membrane and feeling the sound, perceiving it now only aurally but through vibration, one becomes in a way an internal particle of it, of the wave.

This work, although it continues to develop and is in progress (in collaboration and with support of Q-O2 (Brussels) and at I.S.I.B. - Institut Supérieur Industriel de Bruxelles), was recently presented at the CTM Festival Berlin.

Search and Research. A Reflection on Knowledge and Art.
[an open text, a work in progress - subject to alteration and updating as the process of thinking and re-thinking on the subject and questions at hand continues]

François Beukelaers said about the process of beginning the new work that "the most important thing for an actor is not to know". Not to know – this is where every artist starts its project, journey and work. Translatable to any new beginning, in any discipline, it is from not knowing that one has to come to a clear, refined thought and a way to express it. In order to get there one has to experiment, reflect, search, research, and translate.
In the pursuit for being better in expression, without noticing, artists, especially performers, unnoticeably slipped into the chase for technical perfection –to become the fastest, most precise, most skillful… Loosing the track of search and research for expression of meanings and feelings, but rather taking, without notice, inherited knowledge of meanings. In this run to catch up and chase to rank ourselves, and others (among a lot of us), we start pursuing the “measurable” (technical) and start losing the track of the essence – of search for the substance... Art As/Is Knowledge

From thought. To story. To storytelling. With sound.
"Sound Stories: The Color of Sound"

Second of our (Duo Momitani-Sekulic) “Sound Stories” for this season, "The Color of Sound", had its storytelling moment on Sunday, June 14th. With music of Crumb, Dainobu, Delouse, Ledoux, Messiaen, Sciarrino and Tanada, and a special treat of having two new pieces to premier, performing at this wonderful venue was truly inspiring. And it was indeed a great pleasure and a magical experience to play with Nao Momitani in the extraordinary space that is "Atelier Courtois". Beside other pieces, Nao masterfully premiered Claude Ledoux's new creation for solo piano "Japanese e-mail 1: to Dai Fujikura”. We also had the greatest pleasure to premier a new superbe, poetic and sensual creation of Ryo Dainobu “des ombres…”, for violin and piano. The presence of... Continue reading

SOUNDSPOTTING

Aristotle said that the world exists as an imprint in our mind and in this sense everything is interpretation (Aristotle "On Interpretation"). If performance is "the execution of an action; something accomplished" (Oxford Dictionary), then in this sense every sharing and showing of these interpretations can be a performance. A concert is a performance, a theatre play is a performance, a book, a song... But then it should be easy to imagine an existing space for The Performance. An event whose purpose is creating an experience, a platform for experimenting with all aspects known, and maybe unknown, to mankind that can explore and evaluate perception of time and space, and their inhabitation and purpose. An experience that offers a challenge to reexamine and rethink on our own perception and possibilities to create a reality so convincing that it can shake and question the seemingly even most concrete beliefs. The idea of rethinking possibilities for a performance based on experiencing through sound not just experiencing sound reached one of its articulations in a performance called "Soundspotting”. A parcours that took place on April 2nd 2015 in the Bijloke... Continue reading

Magnetic collaboration, with Jasna Veličković, and custom made magnet instruments

A new collaboration set in motion, with composer/performer Jasna Veličković - exploring her new magnet based instrument and its magnetic, rather intoxicating, sounds is truly a delight, exciting and inspiring adventure… The remarkable moment - to discover that something seemingly electronic and artificial can actually be acoustic and manually controlled. This visually appealing instrument, with simple geometric shapes of the magnets (cube, rod, ring, sphere…) in some ways reminds you on Lego, a simple toy which awakens creativity and invention - but now in sound building. And once you start to get to know more about it, you discover that ... Continue reading and see some pictures here!

For creating. Through sound... And sight. The place where you discover, experiment, experience... And dare to try yourself and take a step (or few) further. Memories from the "ArsMusica" International Contemporary Music Festival by Bert De Keyser

On March 20th, within the "ArsMusica" International Contemporary Music Festival, Dejana will perform as part of composer platform of Geoffrey François, in l´Espace Senghor (Brussels) that will begin at 7 pm. Her performance will include "Elles", an exciting piece for solo violin (with surprise elements, especially in the third movement). The composer platform is followed by Geoffrey François' original spectacle "BLEU, d'après Yves Klein Poésie scénique".

During the Brussels "Museum Night Fever" on March 3rd, together with harpist Ursula Aščič, Dejana shared her "fever" in Palais des Beaux-Arts, Henry Le Bœuf Hall .(watch this space for photos soon!)

On February 25th, "Mozart Brussels Ensamble" performed in Musical Instrument Museum, in Brussels. This was a first performance of the Ensamble as a trio with Elisabeth de Mérode (flute), Dejana Sekulić (violin) and Laurent Tardat (viola).

Together with harpist Ursula Aščič, Dejana became a part of "Classics Revisited" concept - a new and exciting project, that combines classical and modern. The duo performed their original program concept on February 23rd in Brussels. Traveling through time of music from Bach to the 21st century classical music - all the way to the moment when they were joined on stage by Mathias Lewis, electronic artist, with whom they did live improvisation set.
